Paraprofessional Educator
State of Illinois certification guidelines for teacher aides/assistants
Title I-funded teacher assistants are required to have one of the following:
- An associate’s (two-year) degree, or
- Two years of college completed (60 credit hours), or
- Demonstrated knowledge, through a formal state or local academic assessment, of reading/language arts, writing and mathematics.
- High school diploma or GED and the following scores on the ACT Workkeys
- Applied Mathematics/Applied Math with a score of 4 or higher.
- Workplace Documents with a score of 4 or higher.
By law, any assessment used to certify teacher assistants must be valid, reliable, and documented.
WorkKeys® Proficiency Certificate for teacher assistants
The WorkKeys is a two-hour computer-based exam over two content areas: Work Place Documents and Applied Mathematics.
