 Kayaking the Sibun River

This will be our chance to study the water shed of the Sibun river.  This will provide us with a whole different perspective of the rainforest.  In January the current is fairly mild so previous kayaking experience is not necessary.

 Rainforest Hike

Explore the diversity of life in a tropical rainforest.  Here you will have a hands on experience to learn about the diverse fauna and flora found throughout  the tropics.  We will take time to sudy the variety of medicinal plants that can be found in the rainforest.

 Neko's Cave

Neko's cave is a cave that is restricted to access by Lincoln Land Community College groups.  There have only been 3 groups to enter this cave since the ancient Mayans last using it.  We can expect to see an amazing array of cave formations as well as hundreds of pottery shards lying were the Mayans left them.

 Belize Zoo

The Belize Zoo is home to hundreds of native Belizean animals.  It was initially established as a refuge for animals that were once used in film making but became to domesticated to be released back into the wild.  Since then it has become a haven for wounded and orphaned animals.

 Orchid Rescue Project

The Cave's Branch Botanical Garden is one of a kind.  This facility was built to house the hundreds of native orchids and bromeliads found in Belize.  Many of these plants were collected in order to save them from being destroyed.  We will have a unique opportuinity to observe and work with rainforest conservation first hand.

 Water Quality Monitoring / Stream Sampling

The water quality world wide is becoming increasingly degraded.  We will be participating in stream sampling that will help us learn about the water quality in the tropics.  This is part of an ongoing study that will be monitoring the Sibun River water quality for years to come.

 Orange Citrus Grove Research

We will have an opportuinity to learn about the citrus farming in an underdeveloped country first hand.  Activities will include studying the productivity of a citrus farm, learning about the agricultural methods used to grow citrus and sampling the product right from the trees.

 Mayan Ruins

Time will be spent visiting several of the main excavated Mayan ruins that can be found in Belize.  We will take a day to tour Xunantunich and Cahal Pech.  From the top of El Castillo we will have an amazing view of the entire Cayo District as well as the border of Guatemala.  A tour of Cahal Pech will allow us a glimpse of what it was like to live as a Mayan family of nobility.

 Birding at the Sibun Education & Adventure Lodge

Every day allows for the opportuinty to see hundreds of new and exciting species of birds.  Sightings of laughing falcons, toucans. white hawks as well as several speceis of hummingbirds is almost guaranteed.  Bring a good pair of binoculars and plenty of film for your camera if you are a bird enthusiast.  If you're not that familiar with Neotropical birds don't worry, we will be working with some of the best native guides in the country.
