LLCC to host children’s author/illustrator Anna Grossnickle Hines “Winter Lights” quilt and poetry exhibit
Special opportunities to meet Hines being offered

Lincoln Land Community College’s Community Learning Department and the Phillip and Mary Kathryn Trutter Museum are hosting a quilt and poetry exhibit by children’s author and illustrator Anna Grossnickle Hines Wednesday, Nov. 18 through Saturday, Nov. 21.  The “Winter Lights” exhibit will be displayed in the Trutter Center on LLCC’s main campus, 5250 Shepherd Road, Springfield.

A lifelong educator and quilter from California, Hines has written and illustrated more than 50 published children’s books.  The “Winter Lights” exhibit will include original fabric art quilts with accompanying panels presenting her original poems.  The exhibit celebrates light ranging from the moon and aurora borealis to the holiday lights of Santa Lucia, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and the Chinese New Year.

The exhibit is open Wednesday, Nov. 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, Nov. 19 and Nov. 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children. In conjunction with the “Winter Lights” exhibit, special opportunities to meet Hines and several intergenerational workshops are being offered in the Trutter Center.  Pre-registration is required for attendance at the events listed below by calling LLCC’s Registration Services at 786-2292.  Learn more by going to www.llcc.edu/commed.

Opportunities to meet Grossnickle Hines

Artists, Designers and Writers Tour and Talk - Wednesday, Nov. 18, 4 to 6 p.m.  Hines will host a guided tour for artists, designers and writers.  She will discuss her writing and book development process at 5 p.m., plus discuss her work as an illustrator, using both traditional media and fabrics.  Quilting professional Rita Barber Church will also offer comments on the changing world of art quilting at 5:30 p.m.  Refreshments will be served.  Cost is $10.  Registration code:  CEW 113-30

Quilters Tour and Talk – Thursday, Nov. 19, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Hines and quilting professional Rita Barber Church will host a special tour for other quilters, with author stories and remarks about the choice of patterns, colors and design of the quilts. Refreshments will be served.  Cost is $10.  Registration code:  CEW 113-01        

Teachers and Educators Tour and Talk - Thursday, Nov. 19, 4 to 6 p.m.
Hines hosts this program for teachers, sharing thoughts at 4:30 p.m. about communicating with children through her work.  At 5:15 p.m., quilting professional and instructional design educator Rita Barber Church joins Hines in a discussion about quilts as teaching tools. Refreshments will be served.  Cost is $10.

Children ages 5 to 7 with adults 17 or older will tour the special winter quilts made by Hines, meet her and listen to her read from her book.  Participants will then make a special holiday craft as a memento of their time together!  Participants are asked to bring their own scissors.  Cost is $15 per person (plus $5 supply fee payable that day to the instructor).  Registration code: YES 100-42 (child)  CEW 103-44A (adult)

Holiday Quilting Workshop – Saturday, Nov. 21, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Children ages 8 to 10 with adults 17 or older will tour the “Winter Lights” quilt exhibit and make a unique holiday wall hanging from beautiful fabrics and adornments. Participants are asked to bring their own scissors.  Cost is $15 per person (plus a $14 supply fee payable that day to the instructor).  Registration code: YES 100-43 (child)  CEW 103-44B (adult)

Holiday Scrapbook Workshop – Saturday, Nov. 21, 1 to 3 p.m.
Artists ages 10 to 16 with adults 17 or older will tour the special holiday quilt exhibit and then make a one-of-a-kind holiday scrapbook that will tell the story of their holiday experiences for years to come. Participants are asked to bring their own scissors.  Cost is $15 per person (plus $15 supply fee payable that day to the instructor).  Course code: YES 100-44 (child)  CEW 103-44C (adult)
