ICD-10 is a radically upgraded diagnostic and procedural medical coding system, and will soon be mandated by the Federal government for use in the healthcare industry in insurance processing, reimbursement, and statistical data gathering. Preparing for and implementing the massive changes to the existing coding system requires that the healthcare industry start preparing for the impacts now. In-depth review of the CMS training manual.

Medical Transcription

240 Hours   Cost: $1595

According to the current edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook Medical Transcription (MT) is among the ten fastest growing occupations in the U.S. An MT often works for hospitals, outpatient clinics, physician offices, national transcription services, or other medical offices. The MT listens to dictated recordings made by physicians and other healthcare professionals and transcribes them; creating medical reports that eventually become part of patients’ permanent files. Students must have excellent editing and proofreading skills. Students must have a basic understanding of a word-processing program, be proficient at keyboarding, creating documents, e-mailing, and printing. Students will gain a working knowledge of medical terminology and the ability to transcribe medical reports, learning the skills they need to obtain an entry-level position as a MT.

The Medical Transcription Certificate Program has been designed to provide students with a beginning knowledge of the transcription of medical records. Included are ten inpatient case studies, ten inpatient reports that can be used as tests or as extra assignments, 25 outpatient reports, and ten outpatient reports that can be used as tests or as extra assignments. Each of these reports has been taken from hospital medical records. They include history and physical examinations, radiology reports, operative procedures, pathology reports, consultations, discharge summaries, a death summary, an autopsy report, and all associated correspondence. Reports are digitally recorded to be transcribed by the student. Different regional accents and background noises, which duplicate real-life situations, are used in the recorded dictation. The speed of the dictations picks up as the student goes forward through the course.

With all of the changes in HIPAA rules and regulations and the constant possibility of audits today’s physicians just can't afford to take a chance of not knowing what is needed to be compliant in the coding and billing of services. This course is designed to help determine what is needed for effective and efficient documentation, when to use modifiers, and how to not "unbundle" services.

The key to a good practice is having a compliance plan in place. Physicians will learn about the resources needed to create a successful compliance program. They will also become familiar with the Office of Inspector General (OIG) Work Plan for 2004. This provides practitioners with the knowledge of services that could be targeted in the New Year's audits and how they can be prepared.

The medical industry is experiencing a tremendous demand for individuals with knowledge of medical office operations, which includes billing and coding, processing insurance forms, and using medical software. According to the American Medical Association there are more than 1.2 million Medical Specialists in the United States. This profession is listed as one of the fastest growing professions in allied health. This course will give you the skills you need to find the job you are looking for as an Administrative Medical Specialist (AMS). The AMS program also provides preparation for the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) national certification exam. Upon successful completion of the AMS course students will be prepared for an entry-level position doing medical billing or coding in a medical office setting. Additionally, students will be prepared to sit for the CCA national certification exam.
