Lincoln Land Community College invites the public to the college’s second annual Lincoln Lecture in commemoration of Abraham Lincoln’s 201st birthday, Feb. 12.
John Lupton, director for history programs with the Illinois Supreme Court Historic Preservation Commission, will speak at 9 a.m. in the Trutter Center on the authentication of Lincoln documents. During his talk entitled, “Fantastic find or forgery: differences in Abraham Lincoln’s handwriting,” he will present examples of various types of Lincoln forgeries. Refreshments will be served and there is no charge to attend.
Mr. Lupton served as assistant editor for two award-winning publications: The Papers of Abraham Lincoln: Legal Documents and Cases, named 2009 Book of the Year by the Illinois State Historical Society; and The Law Practice of Abraham Lincoln: Complete Documentary Edition, winner of the 2001 Annual Book Award from the Abraham Lincoln Institute of the Mid-Atlantic. He is the author of numerous published articles, essays and reviews, and has served as a historical commentator and consultant for documentaries and programs on television, radio and in film.
Prior to his current position, he served as associate director/associate editor of The Papers of Abraham Lincoln. He holds a B.A. and M.A. in history.
Also on the LLCC campus that day, an exhibit of Lincoln posters will be displayed in Menard Hall, with various Lincoln-themed contests for students. Other LLCC locations are planning these activities:
LLCC-Springfield East: Two Lincoln-themed movies will be shown that evening.
LLCC-Jacksonville: Dr. Charles Guthrie will escort American history students to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield.
LLCC-Beardstown: Lincoln-themed contests and a special class for grade school students.
LLCC-Taylorville: Lincoln-themed contests and movie showing.
LLCC-Litchfield: On Feb. 18 at 1:30 p.m., Nancy Briggs will present the program “Abe and Mary’s Kitchen” with food tastings and use of kitchen utensils from the Lincoln era.
