LLCC Truck Driver Training Program featured in international magazine

The Lincoln Land Community College Truck Driver Training Program is featured in an article published in the June edition of the international magazine, Monocle.

The article, entitled “Road Wage – USA,” details the current shortage of qualified truck drivers and how LLCC’s program is helping fill that demand. It includes numerous photographs and interviews with program director Bob Howard and several students.

The article’s writer, Stuart Luman, conducted the interviews in April, after being referred to the LLCC program by George Billows, executive director of the Illinois Trucking Association, based in Willowbook, Ill.

“I told the reporter that our program has 100% job placement, and 70% of our graduates are still working in the trucking industry at the end of one year, which is much higher than the industry standard,” said Mr. Howard. “I believe that is because we thoroughly prepare our students for what the job will entail. We are interested in retention and are very honest about the pros and cons of a career in truck driving. A major plus is the high demand in the industry. Students can graduate on Friday and be at a company orientation the following Monday. The demand is through the roof.”

“I also told the reporter that as a truck driving school, we have a high responsibility to make sure the drivers we put on the road are carefully trained and understand all safety issues,” continued Mr. Howard.

LLCC offers a four-week day training program and six-week evening program, with classes available year-round. “This type of short-term training is very important to development of our area workforce,” said Mr. Howard. More information on enrolling in the program is available by calling Mr. Howard at 217.786.2565.

Monocle, a monthly magazine based in London with bureaus in New York, Zurich and Tokyo, bills itself as “delivering the most original coverage in global affairs, business, culture and design … to an audience of intelligent opinion leaders around the world.” The magazine is available locally at Barnes and Noble Booksellers.
