Free series of Sunday afternoon recitals begins Oct. 21 at Lincoln Land Community College “Funky Jazz Fusion” by the Roger Kimball Band
SPRINGFIELD – “Funky Jazz Fusion,” a performance Sunday afternoon, Oct. 21 by the Roger Kimball Band, is the first in the 2007-08 Lincoln Land Community College Recital Series. The public is cordially invited to the free 4:00 p.m. concert in the Trutter Center.
A group of the best musicians from Springfield have come together to present a cool twist on jazz. The Roger Kimball Band plays a unique mix of funky jazz, spiced with bits of New Orleans-flavored grooves and songs. The group plays music ranging from SpyroGyro and Grover Washington, instrumental arrangements of songs from R&B greats including Anita Baker and Stevie Wonder, and funky standards recorded by New Orleans’ legends such as the Meters, Professor Longhair and the Neville Brothers. All of this is wrapped by great musicianship and improvisation in an upbeat presentation. Musicians currently with the group include:
Roger Kimball (tenor/soprano saxophone, keyboards, vocals) – Roger is originally from the New Orleans area. He has played with Harry Connick Jr., Ivan Neville and Dumpstaphunk, and various bands with Tony Hall, currently bassist with Trey Anastasio. He taught music in schools as well as studied with Rob Lockart and John Mahoney at Loyola University. He has played with a variety of bands and performed in various festivals including the Bourbon Street Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil and the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Roger is affiliated with LLCC as a jazz saxophone instructor and is involved in session work both in New Orleans and the Springfield area.

Nat has studied percussion internationally in Cayo Coco, Cuba and with the Canadian Kosa organization in Montreal and in Vermont.
Jeff Cunningham (bass) -- Originally from Chatham, Illinois, Jeff holds a Bachelor of Arts/Music from the University of North Texas.
