Islamic calligraphy on display; free workshop Feb. 8

SPRINGFIELD – The James S. Murray Gallery at Lincoln Land Community College is hosting the work of Islamic Calligrapher Aishah Holland now through Feb. 8. The exhibit will culminate in an artist’s talk on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 3:30 p.m. in Menard Hall Room 2207. The talk will be followed by a reception in the gallery.

The artist will also be offering a free calligraphy workshop on Friday, Feb. 8 from 10:00 a.m. until noon in the Stephens Room in Menard Hall. Space is limited. Interested parties should contact Leslie Stalter at 786-4967 or leslie.stalter@llcc.edu to sign up.

Elinor Aishah Holland holds a bachelor of arts in religious studies from Temple University and studied Arabic at the University of Pennsylvania. A student of renowned calligrapher Mohamad Zakariya, Holland practices Islamic calligraphy in the traditional method of the Ottoman Hattat (calligraphers).

A student of both Arabic and English calligraphy for 20 years, she has taught Islamic calligraphy to students of all ages at schools, museums and other learning institutions since 1994, including the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center, Smithsonian Institute, Center for Book Arts and Detroit Institute of Art. Her freelance work includes private commissions and commercial pieces.

These events are sponsored by LLCC’s Trutter Museum, Multicultural Awareness Center, Student Life, Art Club, Muslim Student Association and Arts and Humanities Department.
