LLCC celebrates African-American History Month in February

SPRINGFIELD–“Celebrating the Legend. . .Continuing the Legacy” is this year’s theme for African-American History Month at Lincoln Land Community College. To celebrate, the college is hosting a variety of events throughout the month of February. All events are open to the public at no charge and will be held on LLCC’s main campus, 5250 Shepherd Road, Springfield, unless otherwise noted.
• Monday, Jan. 28 – Jabali Afrika, a multi-faceted musical and dance group from Kenya, Africa, will perform noon to 1 p.m. in the Student Union, Menard Hall. The group’s performance will include original compositions and traditional African rhythms on a wide variety of instruments, accompanied by vocal harmonies, dance and tribal costumes for a multi-cultural experience of modern rock, jazz, blues and more. Following their performance, Jabali Afrika will present a 30-minute educational workshop on their music and their culture.
• Friday, Feb. 1 – RESCHEDULED TO FRIDAY, FEB. 15 DUE TO SNOW DAY: The African-American History Month Kickoff will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union, Menard Hall. The event will feature “Saxophone and African-American Poetry Improvisations” performed by Virgil Rhodes, J.D., LLCC retired business law professor and jazz musician.
• Monday, Feb. 4 – The 19th National African-American Read-In will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. in the college library, located in Sangamon Hall. LLCC students and others from the campus community will read from works by African-American writers including Toni Morrison, Langston Hughes and James Baldwin.
• Wednesday, Feb. 6 – “Looking Back 100 Years” will be presented by Janice Whitt, retired LLCC assistant vice president of Advising and Counseling, at a brown bag luncheon from noon to 1 p.m. in the Robert H. Stephens Room, Menard Hall.
• Monday, Feb. 11 - “History of Black Music,” featuring Virgil Rhodes, J.D., and Jazz by Footprints, will be held at 7 p.m. in the Trutter Center.
• Wednesday, Feb. 20 – African-American Food and Vendor Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union, Menard Hall. Guests can sample free African-American food and visit various displays exhibiting the wares of African-American entrepreneurs.
• Saturday, Feb. 23 – An African-American Fine Arts Community Festival will be held at 6 p.m. at Abundant Faith Christian Center, 2525 Taylor Ave., Springfield. The event will feature a music and praise dance program performed by members of the Springfield community. Former Springfield resident Tony Small, a composer/playwright and Stellar Gospel Music Award songwriter, will direct the music portion of the event and Selvarine Jones and Elmada Meek, local dance choreographers, will direct a praise dance team.
• Friday, Feb. 29 – The African-American History Month Finale will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union, Menard Hall. The event will feature Kenny Humble, former LLCC student and jazz musician.
