LLCC plans special activities for Lincoln’s birthday, Feb. 12; public invited
SPRINGFIELD -- Lincoln Land Community College will celebrate Lincoln’s Birthday Tuesday, Feb. 12 with a special series of events for the campus community. The public is also cordially invited to attend.
7:45 -9:15 a.m.: Mary Todd Lincoln (portrayed by Mary Wheeler, LLCC Professor of English) will greet students, faculty and staff as they enter Menard Hall. The Menard entryway will feature a display of Lincoln poster art, and Lincoln-era treats researched and prepared by LLCC Pastry Program students will be served.
11:00 a.m.: The Prairie Aires, four Illinois female musicians, will perform Lincoln-era folk music in the Student Union of Menard Hall.
12 noon: A Brown Bag presentation with Mrs. Lincoln entitled “Trunks: Four Significant Journeys in the Life of Mary Todd Lincoln” will be presented by Professor Mary Wheeler in the Trutter Center.
A scheduled trivia contest has been cancelled.
Also, LLCC Regional Education Centers will feature Lincoln poster art displays along with these special events:
Taylorville: Paper scrolls will be distributed telling the story of Lincoln’s encounter with noisy pigs in Taylorville, prizes will include miniature replicas of Taylorville’s Lincoln Statue, and Lincoln-themed treats will be served.
Jacksonville: A voter registration drive will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. along with Lincoln trivia and other Lincoln-themed contests and refreshments.
Beardstown: Lincoln-themed activities and refreshments. A voter registration drive will be held Monday, Feb. 11 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 15 from noon to 2:00 p.m.
Litchfield: “A Tribute to Lincoln-Music and Readings” by Jerry Dowding will be presented at 6:15 p.m. in the Center’s auditorium. Lincoln bookmarks will also be distributed.
