Free tax preparation assistance for low-income individuals/families
SPRINGFIELD – Lincoln Land Community College’s East Springfield Learning Center has been identified as a Tax Counseling Project preparation site for the 2006 tax-filing season.
Tax Counseling Project services will be available Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning Jan. 24 through Apr. 14 at the LLCC East Springfield Learning Center, 1507 E. Cook St., Springfield. The site will be closed Feb. 12; March 10, 12, 14; and Apr. 7.
Free tax preparation is available for individuals with incomes less than $15,000 and families (more than one person in household) with incomes less than $40,000. Clients seeking tax preparation assistance should bring to the ESLC tax site the following documents: all W-2s and1099s; social security cards or individual taxpayer identification numbers for all family members; copy of 2005 tax return, if available; bank account number and routing number, if choosing to direct deposit their tax refund; and a valid photo ID.
The Tax Counseling Project is a program of the Center for Economic Progress. According to the center’s Web site, the Tax Counseling Project was launched at four Chicago homeless shelters in 1994 and has grown into the nation's largest free statewide tax preparation service for working families and individuals. Each year, trained volunteers spread out across the state at community colleges, libraries, banks, churches and other locations to provide free tax preparation assistance for families with low incomes.
