LLCC announces WYSE Academic Challenge winners

SPRINGFIELD—Twenty high schools in the Lincoln Land Community College district competed in the 11th annual Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) regional level academic challenge held Thursday, Feb. 8 at LLCC.

Students competed as individuals and as teams in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics and physics. The tests were written by teams of college and university faculty and designed to present a challenge to high school students.

School teams comprise six to 14 students who compete in one of three divisions, based on total school enrollment. Division 300 comprises schools with a total enrollment of 300 or less. Division 700 schools have 301 to 700 students and Division 1500 schools have enrollments of 701 to 1,500 students.

Teams and individuals that place either first or second (or third in the case of teams in divisions with eight or more teams) within their respective divisions at the regional level are eligible to advance to the sectional competition to be held at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville March 6. Teams and individuals that score high enough at the sectional competition will advance to the state finals, which will be held at the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign April 17-19.

A complete list of teams and individuals who qualified to advance from the LLCC regional competition to the March 6 SIU-E sectional is posted at http://www.engr.uiuc.edu/wyse/AC/2007_Results/llcc.pdf.

The regional level competition at LLCC was sponsored by LLCC, the WYSE office at UIU-C and the Capital Chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers (ISPE).
