Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week activities

Lincoln Land Community College’s Community Volunteer Center and Student Life Office are sponsoring a variety of activities to highlight Hunger and Homelessness Week Nov. 13 through 17. All events will take place on LLCC’s main campus, 5250 Shepherd Road, Springfield. The public is invited. Events scheduled for the week include:

Volunteer Fair • Monday, Nov. 13, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Menard Hall – Community organizations that address the needs of hunger and homelessness will provide information about community needs and how community members can get involved.

Oxfam Hunger Banquet • Tuesday, Nov. 14, 5:30 p.m., Trutter Center – The Oxfam Hunger Banquet is an interactive educational program that dramatizes the unequal distribution of food in the world. Chris McDonald, Ph.D., LLCC professor of political science, will provide the keynote address and Sharon Cheek, LLCC assistant professor of radiography, will serve as the banquet moderator. Contact the LLCC Student Life Office, at 786-2241, to make a reservation.

Pack the Van Food Drive • Wednesday, Nov. 15, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – in front of Menard Hall –The community is invited to participate in a food drive to fill an LLCC cargo van! All proceeds will benefit the Central Illinois Foodbank.

Skip-a-Meal Day • Thursday, Nov. 16, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. - Student Union in Menard Hall – Instead of going out for lunch, the public is invited to donate the day’s lunch money to purchase blankets for local homeless shelters. New or gently used blankets may also be dropped off at the Community Volunteer Center located in the Millennium Center at LLCC.

“Badd JuJu” benefit concert • Friday, Nov. 17, 6 to 8 p.m., Trutter Center – A benefit concert with rock ‘n’ roll band “Badd JuJu” will be held, followed by a candlelight vigil. Admission to the concert is one canned good. All proceeds will benefit the Central Illinois Foodbank.
