Discussion series on immigration planned at Lincoln Land Community College
The public is invited to an upcoming discussion series entitled “Immigration: the Facts, the Faces and the Future” at Lincoln Land Community College. The series will be held on three consecutive Mondays: March 19, 26 and April 2 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in LLCC’s Trutter Center. Participants may attend one or all of the sessions. There is no cost but registration is required by calling 786.2292 (ask for course number CEW 113-01).
This discussion series, sponsored by LLCC’s Community Learning department, will review current and past immigration trends and laws. Participants will be encouraged to fit their families’ experience into the broad national patterns. In addition, the experience of becoming American will be explored through fiction, case histories and film.
The discussion will be led by Linda Kopecky, a retired high school and college instructor who also worked with the State Board of Education.
John Allen, director of LLCC Community Learning, promises a lively exploration of a timely topic. “Immigration has been controversial since the earliest days of our country. George Washington felt that people from all nations, religions and economic backgrounds should be welcomed, while Benjamin Franklin feared the impact of masses of Europe’s downtrodden on the young nation. The United States has accepted more immigrants than any other nation, but the debate continues.”
More information is available from Mr. Allen at 786-2430.
