SPRINGFIELD–Lincoln Land Community College and the Illinois State Museum are hosting the 100th anniversary meeting of the Illinois State Academy of Science on Friday and Saturday, April 20 and 21.
The Academy of Science is celebrating one hundred years of promoting scientific research and education, disseminating scientific knowledge and unifying the scientific interests in Illinois. Founded in 1907, the Academy’s first organizational meeting was held that year in Springfield, Illinois on Dec. 7.
On April 20, the Illinois State Museum will host the meeting and a Centennial Celebration. Registration will be open in the museum lobby from 1 to 4 p.m. From 2 to 4 p.m., scientists from around the state will present 66 posters presenting research representing divisions of the Academy (agriculture; botany; cell, molecular, and developmental biology; earth science; environmental science; health sciences; microbiology; science, math and technology education; and zoology). The schedule and program for the meeting are available on the Illinois State Academy of Science Web site at www.il-acad-sci.org.
At 4 p.m, Dr. Roger Anderson, Department of Biological Sciences, Illinois State University will present the Centennial Address: Perspective on Thirty Years of Prairie Research: Our Evolving Understanding of Patterns and Processes in the Illinois State Museum’s auditorium. Dr. Anderson will be presented with the Academy’s Centennial Award for his long-term, outstanding contributions to scientific research and education. Following his lecture, participants will gather on the first floor of the museum for the Centennial Party and an open house in the Changes exhibition, the museum’s new natural history hall. Museum scientists will be on hand to provide special insights to the exhibition, which tells the story of 500 million years of environmental change in Illinois. Refreshments will be served.
On April 21, Lincoln Land Community College will host the Academy in Menard Hall on LLCC’s main campus, 5250 Shepherd Road. Registration will be open from 8 to 9 a.m. From 9 to 11 a.m., papers will be presented by the botany; cell, molecular and developmental biology; chemistry; computer science; science, math, and technology education; environmental science; health sciences; and zoology divisions.
From 11 a.m.-noon, Dr. Leon Lederman, Nobel Laureate and Director Emeritus of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, will present the keynote address on Sputnik and the Boiling Frog: Comments on U.S. Science Education. Dr. Lederman’s presentation will be held in the LLCC Student Union in Menard Hall and is open to the public.
Dr. Lederman is an internationally renowned high-energy physicist and currently holds an appointment as Pritzker Professor of Science at Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. He is a founder and the inaugural Resident Scholar at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, a three-year residential public high school for the gifted. Following Dr. Lederman’s presentation will be the member’s banquet and business meeting. Division papers will resume from 1:30-5:00 p.m. with presentations on botany, environmental science, zoology and archaeology. A total of 71 papers will be presented during the course of the day.
On-site registration for the meeting is $75 for members ($35 for students) and $120 for non-members ($57.50 for students). Non-members receive a one-year membership including a subscription to the Transactions of the Illinois State Academy of Science.
