An introduction to the multicultural literature of the United States, this course acquaints students with representative creative works — fiction, poetry, and drama — by ethnic Americans who have traditionally not been part of the dominant culture: African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Hispanics and Native-Americans. LIT 114 Introduction to the Film as Literature

In this course the film is approached through almost the same formal methods of analysis and study as those commonly used for the novel. The primary emphasis is interpretative. (2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours)
LIT 120 Introduction to Children’s Literature

This course examines children’s literature as rich and culturally complex works of fiction. Students enrolled in the course begin to understand historical development and social construction of literature for the young (pre-school to adolescent) as written by adults. Texts from a variety of literary forms and periods: fantasy; contemporary realism; historical realism; folk and fairy tales (oral culture and literary); poetry; and picture books are read and analyzed. Students learn various approaches to determine literary meaning, form and value including relevant literary theory. (3 lecture hours)
LIT 147 Women in Modern Literature

Major literary works—novels, short stories, drama, and poetry—by important 19th- and 20th-century women writers are covered in this course, which also includes a close scrutiny of literary criticism relevant to women writers and a study of the varied literary styles and techniques of women writers. LIT 150 Creative Writing: Fiction

Students learn the structure and elements of fiction and the writing process, produce fully developed works of fiction and demonstrate an understanding of the critical terminology of creative writers. Basic elements, character, dialog and point of view are discussed. Students learn by reading well-written short stories and participating in thought ful discussion and written exercises. This course is the first semester of a two-semester chronological survey of English literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to modern time. Emphasized are the artistic value of literature and an understanding of the swing of the literary pendulum as a reflection of the times, revealing the relation of literature to life. This course surveys the Anglo-Saxon Period, Middle English Period, the Renaissance, the 17th century and the Neoclassical Age. (3 lecture hours)

The first of a two-semester chronological survey of American literature, this course treats the period from 1607 to 1865. By study of earlier writers like Edwards and Franklin and 19th-century literary figures such as Poe, Hawthorne, Thoreau and Whitman, students explore developing cultural attitudes and the treatment of the American experience in literature. The second of a two-semester chronological survey of American literature, this course covers the period from 1865 to the present. Through study of writers such as Twain, James, Crane, Frost and Hemingway, students explore literary trends from romanticism to modernism. (3 lecture hours)
