Denise Blakeman - Portraits of a Different Nature
A showcase of paintings by local artist Denise Blakeman will open in the James S. Murray Gallery on November 21st. Blakeman’s lyrical paintings are born from her immediate surroundings and then twisted and formed around personal stories and feelings on the human condition and a need to see the lighter things. Blakeman admits an affinity for “kitsch” that she allows into her paintings to help with comic relief on more serious subjects she might be using as her inspiration. Her paintings have a tinge of the surrealistic with a bright, appealing palette.

She now holds a B.A. in visual arts from the University of Illinois-Springfield and has begun exhibiting her work in Springfield and Decatur. She works as a full-time artist in her studio in Taylorville, Illinois.
