The James S. Murray gallery will host the paintings of Kevin Veara from March 12th until March 29th. Veara is a Springfield local who received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Sangamon State and his Master of Fine Arts from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. His paintings have been exhibited nationwide. Most of his paintings reveal his interest and study of the avian world, each detail and feather meticulously recorded. He says, “ I’ve always had a great liking for birds, they are the barometer of the quality of the environment.” His artist statement reveals that his focus in art is on the birds and plant life of the Sangamon River valley in particular.
Veara begins a painting with drawings on tracing paper, which he then transfers to a prepared board. He is owner and operator of the successful tattoo business, Black Moon Tattoos. The transfer process he prefers to use to begin a painting is a reflection of processes he must use for his business. Veara also says that this influence can also be seen in the vivid colors and swirling forms he uses in all his paintings.
