Course Description:

This one day seminar discusses the latest information on stroke diagnosis and treatment. Barb starts the lecture with a review of neuroanatomy and the blood supply to the brain and spinal cord. Barb provides a comprehensive overview of modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors and the treatment and prevention of the modifiable risk factors for both hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes. The lecture will focus on the classic clinical presentation for both hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes. Barb will demonstrate an acute neuro exam for the patient presenting to an emergency room with possible stroke symptoms and she will discuss the neuro exam for the patient with chronic stroke signs and symptoms. Acute emergency treatment for hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes will be discussed as will chronic treatment protocols.

Program Content/Objectives:

1.       Discuss the risk factors for hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes.

2.       Describe the symptom onset for hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes.

3.       Discuss the anterior and posterior vascular supply of the brain and brainstem.

4.       Compare the functional neuroanatomy of the brain as it relates to the vascular supply.

5.       List the various treatment modalities for acute hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes.

6.       Summarize the numerous prevention measures that can be taken to prevent strokes.
