"Use a Course Web Site to Reduce Anxiety and Keep Students Informed"

Carmen Allen will talk about howbeginning of the semester is an exciting time for both faculty and students.  However, various challenges can be experienced when expectations for a course aren't clearly understood.   Come see how faculty in the Business and Technology department are using the web to prepare students for the CAS-121 computer technology course.  The course site provides thorough course information, computer skill assessments and video training for students previous to enrollment.

Anarchy in the Classroom can be a Good Thing

September 10, 2009

12:00-1:00p.m.

S 0120

David presents a new teaching technique (on behalf of TEAM-L).  He was inspired by Dave Sykes, John Scarbrough, and David Reynolds.  The main component is “Active Learning”, where students do most of the presentation in class.  There is also an element of “Mastery Learning” where students can take different exams repeatedly in an effort to improve.  In addition there is an element of self-paced learning, where students are rewarded for working ahead.  Finally the final exam plays a big role in the students’ final grades.  Scores in these sections are sky-rocketing compared to traditional lectures.  Student attitudes are very positive (even in a math class!) and interaction between students in and out of class is greater than ever.  [TEAM-L stands for “Teachers Experimenting and Assessing to Maximize Learning”.  We encourage all LLCC faculty to experiment in the classroom and then to assess their results to hopefully improve student performance.]

·         CurricUNET
CurricUNET , is a web-based system that will allow us to develop and maintain courses and programs here on campus, route the proposal through our approval process and electronically submit them to ICCB if required. All curriculum proposals must now be submitted through this system. Elaine Guthals-Carrier will be providing training on CurricUNET, and it is imperative that faculty attend one of these training sessions to be able to update courses and programs and to receive your logon information. These sessions will be hands-on sessions, so bring information to practice inputting new courses and programs. Please call Elaine at 62276 or email her at Elaine.guthals-carrier@llcc.edu to reserve your seat and ensure your account has been built.
