Qualifying for the COS 250 (Hospital Medical Coding) Internship

As a COS 250 intern, you must...

  • Be a Medical Coding Specialist Certificate of Completion major in the Computer and Office Systems program at LLCC who has completed the required COS courses (Computer and Office Systems) related to medical coding.
  • Be in good academic standing (not on academic probation) for one full semester preceding your internship.
  • Be at least 18 years of age or older.
  • Arrange a meeting with Christie to discuss the internship.

Before the Internship

  • Sign the Waiver and Release Agreement form and/or take out insurance in case of injury on-the-job. Please remember LLCC is not responsible.
  • Complete and submit all required paperwork to Christie prior to the internship experience.
  • Work with Christie to obtain placement at one of the "approved" hospital sites. Christie will make the initial contact with the sites on the "approved" list--not the student.
  • Register for COS 250.
You will need to have Christie's signature on an Add/Drop form to give to LLCC Registration. Please contact Christie at least one or two weeks in advance of registering to obtain the form.
Complete any additional testing, physicals, background checks, or forms as specified by the internship site prior to the start of your internship.
  • Meet with the internship site supervisor prior to the first day of your internship experience and determine your work schedule.

During the Internship

  • Complete a minimum of 225 clock hours of work experience for the internship (approximately 14 hours per week during the fall or spring semesters) to earn 3 credit hours.
  • Notify the internship coordinator immediately when interrupting this program.
  • Diligently and faithfully perform the work and duties of the internship and abide by the plan of training as prepared.
  • Adhere to the rules, regulations, and policies of the employer. Looking up medical records outside of job responsibilities could result in being terminated from internship and failing the internship. Additionally, it may result in being dismissed from the LLCC Medical Coding program.

MY SIGNATURE HERE MEANS I AGREE TO THE ABOVE TERMS

(You will submit a copy of this form to Christie with your initial paperwork.)
