WelderThe Welding Operator Program is designed to provide skill development in currently used welding processes including flat and position welding. Additional skill development may be obtained in brazing, soldering, cutting, layout and fabrication techniques. Activities including oxyacetylene, shielded-arc, MIG/TIG welding and cutting techniques are provided.  Welding fabrication, entry level welder certification, pipe welding and aluminum welding have recently been added to this curriculum.

Admission Requirements
If you are a first-time LLCC student seeking admission to the Welding Operator program, you must meet the general requirements for admission to the college.

Enrollment is based upon a waiting list. Interested students should contact the preferred enrollment location to have their name added to the waiting list.

Program Costs
Please refer to the current college catalog and schedule for exact tuition and fees.

Other Expenses
Students must purchase a welding helmet with a #10 lens, welding gloves, welding jacket, steel-toe boots and safety glasses. (Approximate cost $150.)

Course content
The classroom environment is not a traditional lecture class, as 90% of the classroom time is actually spent with hands-on activities in a lab environment. Students enrolling in these classes should be self-motivated and able to work at their own pace. Student knowledge regarding course content will be assessed through tests, examinations, project evaluation, and instructor observations.

Class Times
This program is offered in both day and evening formats. Day classes are held at the Eastern Region Education Center (EREC) in Taylorville. Evening classes are held at the Eastern Region Education Center in Taylorville and the Western Region Education Center in Jacksonville. Contact your enrollment center for the current class schedule.

Attendance
Class attendance and punctuality are factors affecting the final grade earned with the course.

Apparel
   · Leather boots/shoes, steel toed preferred. NO TENNIS SHOES.
   · Welding helmet in good condition with appropriate lens shade.
   · Leather gloves, gauntlet style.
   · Long sleeve shirt, leather sleeves or jacket recommended.
   · Shirts or pants with frayed material will not be allowed.

Curriculum for certificate of completion
The Welding Operator Certificate of Completion consists of five classes totaling 16 credit hours. A certificate of completion will be awarded to students who complete the 16-credit-hour program.

   · Basic Metal Arc and Oxyacetylene Welding
   · Welding Blueprint Reading
   · Advanced Metal Arc Welding
   · MIG Welding
   · TIG Welding

Curriculum for certificate of achievement
The Welding Operator Certificate of Achievement consists of  classes totaling 30 credit hours. A certificate of achievement will be awarded to students who complete the 30-credit-hour program.

Course of study includes:

   · Basic Metal Arc and Oxyacetylene Welding
   · Welding Blueprint Reading
   · Advanced Metal Arc Welding
   · MIG Welding
   · TIG Welding
   · Welding Fabrication
   · Entry Level Welder Certification
   · Pipe Welding
   · Aluminum Welding

Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in a welding-related educational or training program.  Applicants must be a high school graduate or possess a GED equivalent.  Financial need is not required to qualify.  Each award is an average of $500-$1,000 and is granted on an annual basis.  Awards are selected at the District Level, based on the quantity and quality of the applicants.  The application deadline is March 1, 2008 for the following fall term.  Application and information is available from the AWS website.

   · Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
   · Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)
   · Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)
   · Brazing
   · Cutting

   · Layout and fabrication techniques


Class activities
Class activities may include:
   · Shielded metal arc welding processes in flat and horizontal positions
   · Identifying welding symbols, and interpreting drawings, sketches and blueprints
   · Shielded metal arc welding processes in horizontal, vertical and overhead positions
   · Gas metal arc welding processes in flat, vertical and overhead positions
   · Gas tungsten arc welding processes in all positions on mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum
   
· Schedule 40 steel pipe in various positions
   · High quality welds using aluminum
