Experience the history, culture, and atmosphere of the Rhine River region of Western Germany. This study tour will lead participants on a journey from Cologne to Munich, with stops at Aachen, Trier, Heidelberg, Worms, Speyer, Ulm, and Dachau. In addition to many museums and cultural sights, travelers will visit the palaces of emperors, the walls of the Roman Empire, the cathedrals of the reformation, and the death camps of the holocaust.
Tour Itinerary
Day 1 – Overnight Flight to Frankfurt
Day 2 – Arrive Frankfurt
Transfer to the Rhineland, home of Germany’s largest and most modern cities. For over 2000 years the Rhine River has served as an important trade route. Though the river begins in Switzerland and flows to the Netherlands, the majority of its 850 miles snakes through the mountains of Germany.
Overnight in Cologne
Day 3 – Cologne and Aachen
Your tour director will lead you through the 2000 year old city, which was founded by the Romans. Visit one of Germany’s most moving symbols: Cologne’s sublime, war-scarred Gothic cathedral (the Kolner Dom). Within the cathedral is the shrine to the Three Wise Men. Also visit one of the most popular museums in Germany, the Romano-Germanic Museum. From Cologne the group will travel to the capital of Carolingian Europe at Aachen.

Day 4 – Trier & Heidelberg
Enjoy a guided tour of Germany’s oldest town. Founded by Augustus in 16 A.D. Trier served as a political and religious capital for Germany for over 1000 years.

Day 5 – Heidelberg and the Neckar Valley
Today’s highlight is cruise along the romantic Neckar River past castles and along the medieval trade routes of central Germany. This ½ day cruise included a visit to the 13th century Dilsberg Fortress.

Day 6 – Worms & Speyer
Visit one of the most important locations of the Protestant Reformation in the Holy Roman Imperial capital of Worms. Martin Luther was declared an outlaw after refusing to submit to papal authority at this city’s Diet before Charles V. From Worms we will travel to Speyer, location of one of Europe’s oldest Romanesque cathedrals and the Museum of the Palatinate.
Overnight in Heidelberg.
Day 7 – To Munich via Ulm and Dachau
On our transfer from Heidelberg to Munich we will travel from the sublime to the grotesque and finish with the conventional. First we will visit Ulm, the location of the tallest cathedral in the world and the hometown of Albert Einstein. We will then proceed to Dachau, site of the first Nazi concentration camp in World War II. Day 6 ends with dinner at the world famous Hofbrauhaus.

Day 8 – Munich
We will begin this day with a walking tour of the old city and then free time to explore this capital of Bavaria and its many cultural, artistic, and historical sites.
Participants can also take this opportunity to join an optional excursion to the castle of King Ludwig at Neuschwanstein and the famous passion play city of Oberammergau.
Overnight in Munich.
Day 9 – Return to Chicago
Trip cost includes airfare, accommodations, motor coach transportation, museum and historic site admission fees, a fulltime EF guide, as well as continental breakfasts.
The cost for this trip, based on 25 participants is a follows;
For participants under 23 years of age, $2200. Participants must be 18 years old at the time of travel.
*Participants over age 23 will also pay an adult supplemental fee of $290
