Members of State Representative Sara Wojcicki Jimenez’s Higher Education Student Advisory Committee, co-chaired by Lincoln Land Community College student Gabby Jones (center in photo) and University of Illinois-Springfield student Kaelen Smith, have partnered with several downtown Springfield businesses to create a new shopping discount program for UIS and LLCC students. By showing their student ID at downtown businesses displaying the Downtown Discounts decal, students will receive discount deals at many of their favorite local stores and eateries.
“I am so proud of these young men and women on my Higher Education Advisory Committee. They have taken their role beyond discussing legislation to actively working for the betterment of our community. The discount program they have spearheaded will help get young adults involved downtown, and hopefully, develop a relationship that will make them want to stay here;” said Rep. Jimenez (right in photo).
“This is a terrific idea,” said Dr. Charlotte Warren, president of LLCC (left in photo), at a press conference at Springfield Vintage to announce the new discounts. “It brings together the local colleges, students and downtown businesses: what a great opportunity for all. The buying and spending power of 10,000 students – think what an impact that can have in support of downtown.”
“This discount program is an example of students and local leaders working together to improve the community for everyone,” said Smith. “I hope this program inspires more students to become active partners with community members to enhance the quality of life in Springfield.” Jones added, “We hope to see more LLCC and UIS students downtown. There is so much culture here along with great places to eat and shop.”
The Downtown Discounts program officially kicked off today with 10 participating businesses, including Springfield Vintage, Custom Cup Coffee, Daisy Jane’s, the Hoogland Center for the Arts, Jade’s Far East Emporium’ The Roost’ Wild Rose, Studio 6, Z Bistro and Udder Hut, Jojo’s Street Cuisine, and Recycled Records. Deals vary, but many include a 10% discount or buy-one-get-one-free offers.
“We want everyone to shop local. Downtown Discounts will encourage students to spend more time downtown exploring our unique shops and restaurants, and to take advantage of all that our wonderful community has to offer. I am very excited about this new partnership,” said Lisa Clemmons Stott, Executive Director of Downtown Springfield Inc.
Smith says he and fellow Advisory Committee members look forward to adding more downtown businesses to the program in the coming months, and have set up a Facebook page to keep students up to date on the latest deals and discounts.
