Lincoln Land Community College will conduct commencement exercises on Friday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bank of Springfield Center in Springfield.
Evan D. Miller of Springfield, formerly of Palatine, has been selected as this year’s commencement speaker. He is graduating with an associate in arts with an emphasis in elementary education. Miller is a member of Phi Theta Kappa academic honor society and plans to continue his study of elementary education at Millikin University with a focus on special education.
Gordon Davis of Springfield and Gabrielle Jones of Williamsville are serving as student marshals for the commencement ceremony. Davis, formerly of Cadillac, Mich., serves as vice president of service for LLCC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter and as representative for social sciences in the LLCC Student Government Association. Active in LLCC’s Model Illinois Government, he won the David S. Hunt Award for Outstanding Senate Committee Chairperson and the award for Outstanding Service to a Model Illinois Government Team. Davis will graduate with an associate degree in political science. He plans to transfer to the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) to pursue his goal of becoming a professor of political science.
Jones is active in the LLCC Phi Theta Kappa chapter, a member of the LLCC Honors Program and co-chair of State Representative Sara Wojcicki Jimenez’s Higher Education Student Advisory Committee. In that role, Jones worked to establish a shopping discount program in downtown Springfield for LLCC and UIS students. Jones’ honors include being named to the President’s and Vice President’s lists. She is graduating with an associate degree with an emphasis in accounting and plans to transfer to UIS, working toward a career in government auditing.
Timothy B. Smith is being recognized with the 2018 Honored Alumni Award. Smith earned an associate in applied science degree from LLCC in 1987 and a bachelor’s degree from UIS. In 2000, he became president of Evan Lloyd Associates, a leading architectural design firm based in Springfield. Smith has been involved in numerous design projects related to education, aviation, banking, office, retail, medical and parks. He is also an active community supporter and volunteer, including serving as Sherman, Ill. village architect; Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce board member; Dana-Thomas House Foundation board member and past president; UIS Auditorium Advisory Committee, president and board member; YMCA Soccer Program recreation committee member and coach; Habitat for Humanity strategic planning task force member; and Boy Scouts of America Troup 330 committee member. In 2017, Tim was honored with the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce Chairman’s Award and Volunteer of the Year Award from the Dana-Thomas House Foundation. He was also recognized with the 2004 Business Ethics Award from the Springfield Business Journal and 2001 Small Business Owner of the Year Award from the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce.
