Merriam-Webster dictionary defines scholarship as “a grant-in-aid to a student (as by a college or foundation).” In most cases, this grant-in-aid does not need to be repaid. But, a scholarship to Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC) student is so much more.
College is expensive! It is one of the largest investments many families ever make. By attending LLCC, students can save 75 percent or more on the first two years of college. As the cost of college continues to climb, scholarship assistance for students has become increasingly necessary to make college accessible and affordable. It is more important than ever for students to apply for scholarships. Putting in the work and time in applying for scholarships could save thousands of dollars on a college education. Sometimes students feel discouraged about applying for scholarships because they assume they will not receive one. I remind students that we offer a wide variety of scholarship opportunities based on programs of study, financial need, geographic area and more.
Seeking out scholarships can make a huge difference in making college completion a reality and a success. A perfect example is LLCC second-year student, Catherine Wittler. She proudly tells practically everyone that LLCC was the best decision she ever made. She opened a letter from the LLCC Foundation to find that she had been awarded a scholarship from the Foundation and admitted into the Honors Program. She says that a year ago she was relatively shy, definitely not a leader, and cried on her way to school the day that she had to give a one minute introduction speech in her speech class. Now…fast forward. Catherine served as the student speaker at our recent scholarship appreciation event, is president of the Honors Program Club, an officer in Phi Theta Kappa honor society, public relations officer of the Student Government Association, and a member of the Quiz Bowl Team. Catherine says that LLCC truly shaped and changed her, and without a scholarship from the Foundation, she may not have come to LLCC at all and been able to accomplish so much.
The LLCC Foundation recently held its annual Scholarship Donor Appreciation Reception during which we honor scholarship donors, while providing them the opportunity to experience first-hand how their generous gifts impact the lives of LLCC students. Thanks to the support and generosity of individuals, community businesses and organizations, the LLCC Foundation awarded over 250 scholarships totaling nearly $300,000 to students attending LLCC in the 2016-2017 academic year.
2017 is an extra special year for LLCC, in fact, it is golden, as it marks our 50th anniversary. Our founding trustees had an amazing vision and through their hard work, made a compelling case for what a community college could offer this area. Scholarships assist in meeting the college’s mission of offering students a quality, affordable and accessible education.
The LLCC Foundation is currently accepting scholarship applications for the 2017-2018 academic year. Students considering or planning to attend LLCC beginning in fall 2017 are encouraged to apply. Deadline to apply is March 1.
LLCC Foundation scholarships are available for first-time and continuing students who will be enrolled full- or part-time at LLCC. Many of the scholarships are designed for students in any program of study, with the average award being approximately $1,000 per academic year. Only one application form is needed to apply for all scholarships. Students submitting a complete application are considered for all available scholarships for which they are eligible.
The online application is available at www.llccfoundation.org/scholarships.
