Exercise & Sport Science (ESS) --previously Physical Education (PHE)




The Exercise and Sport Science program provides courses for students interested in pursuing a baccalaureate degree in physical education or sports science. This program is designed to prepare students for careers as a physical education or recreation teacher, and/or careers in related fields such as: physical therapy, sports management, sports psychology, coaching, etc. This program provides lower division preparation for students transferring to most senior institutions.  In addition, degree and non-degree students alike are provided opportunities for regular physical activity through general activity classes.

Exercise and Sport Science Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Exercise and Sport Science Program, a student shall be able to:
  • Explain the possibilities of life span physical activity and how to achieve it.
  • Identify the numerous career opportunities in the field of sport, physical education, and fitness.
  • Identify a variety of resources to achieve and maintain optimal levels of fitness, and demonstrate appropriate utilization of some of those resources.
  • Recognize the cultural implications of physical education in a historical context.
  • Explain leadership, planning skills, and motivational techniques in an administrative and/or coaching setting.
  • Define relevant athletic terminology and rules.
