Supplemental Instruction & Study Groups

What students are saying about Supplemental Instruction

"Without Supplemental Instruction, I never would have passed my HIS 101 class."

"Our SI Leader was very knowledgeable and helped us to review the material in new and effective ways."

"The SI Leader challenged us to think about the material in fun and different ways."

What is Supplemental Instruction?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a series of weekly review/discussion sessions for students taking historically difficult courses.  SI gives students an opportunity to get together with people in their class to compare notes, discuss important concepts, to develop strategies for studying the subject, and to test each other before the professor does.

Each SI study group is lead by a competent student who has previously taken the course and serves as a "model" student to help others integrate content and study skills.  The leader facilitates the study sessions by using probing and redirecting techniques to help students develop the critical thinking skills appropriate for the course.

SI study sessions generally take place in classrooms located in either Sangamon or Menard Hall. Furthermore, the schedule for SI study groups varies each semester. Please contact the Center for Academic Success at 217.786.2396 to find out which Supplemental Instruction groups will be meeting in any given semester and where each of these study groups will be meeting.
