The Lincoln Land Community College Veterans Club will sponsor a 5K Run/Walk Saturday, June 7 to raise funds in support of a new scholarship honoring the late LLCC graduate and Illinois State Trooper Brian McMillen.
McMillen, 24, was killed in the line of duty with the Illinois State Police last October. He had served as a technical sergeant in the Air National Guard and spent two years of active duty with the Air Force in Saudi Arabia and Romania. He worked in the LLCC Veterans Office while a student there. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois-Springfield and was pursuing a master’s degree at the time of his death.
The 5K Run/Walk will begin at 8:00 that morning on the LLCC main campus. Trophies and medals will be awarded in several categories.
Pre-registration is requested by May 16 online at www.llccveteransclub.org or in person at the LLCC Veterans Office in Menard Hall. Cost is $20 for adults, $10 for LLCC students and anyone aged 17 and under. T-shirts are available to the first 100 to pre-register.
The Brian McMillen Scholarship will provide financial support to veterans attending LLCC.
“Our 5K Run/Walk is intended to not only raise money for the Brian McMillen Scholarship, but to call attention to our Veterans Club and the support and services we offer to veterans,” said Chris Izatt, LLCC Veterans Club president. “We feel it is an appropriate way to honor Brian, who meant so much to his friends and colleagues at LLCC.”
The LLCC Veterans Club was established to engage students in service activities supporting veterans. Services include supporting troops overseas, performing local volunteer work, raising money to fund scholarships and assisting veterans in need. The club also participates in the planning of Veterans Day activities on the LLCC campus.
