LLCC sponsors Lincoln Essay Contest

LLCC sponsoring Lincoln Essay Contest for students throughout the LLCC district
SPRINGFIELD – In anticipation of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth on Feb. 12, 2009, Lincoln Land Community College is sponsoring a Lincoln Essay Contest for students throughout the LLCC district. The LLCC Lincoln Essay Contest is endorsed by the Illinois Bicentennial Commission.
Cash prizes and savings bonds will be awarded for first through third places in the categories of elementary school (grades 2-3 and grades 4-5), middle school (grades 6-8), and high school (grades 9-12). Home-schooled students are also welcome to participate. A separate essay contest is planned for LLCC students.
Teachers are invited to view entry forms, topics, rules and rubrics, available online at www.llcc.edu/LincolnEssayContest.
“We hope educators will see this as an opportunity for students to learn more about one of the most revered statesmen in American history,” said Mary Wheeler, LLCC professor of English and coordinator of the essay contest. “The contest winners, moreover, will receive some impressive prizes, and these authors and those receiving honorable mention, their families, teachers and principals will be honored guests at a special awards reception the college will host in April of 2009.”
Teachers should notify Professor Wheeler at mary.wheeler@llcc.edu of their students’ intent to participate by Monday, December 8. All entries are due by Friday, Feb. 27, 2009.
Prizes for first, second and third place winners include: Elementary School (grades 2-3); $100, $75, $50 Savings Bonds plus cash awards of $50, $25, $15 Elementary School (grades 4-5); $100, $75, $50 Savings Bonds plus cash awards of $50, $25, $15 Middle School (grades 6-8); $200, $100, $50 Savings Bonds plus cash awards of $75, $50, $25 High School (grades 9-12); $500, $250, $100 Savings Bonds plus cash awards of $100, $50, $25 LLCC students: $500, $250 Savings Bonds plus cash awards of $500, $250 (no third place) LLCC has a number of events scheduled to mark the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth including special campus activities; an Artist Invitational Exhibit during February in the James S. Murray Gallery; a new exhibit, “The Trutter Connection to Lincoln,” opening in February in the Trutter Museum; and day trips to area Lincoln sites.
