The HIREEducation Program transitions students into a union apprenticeship program. The program has been developed to address needs identified by local union representatives.
The program is seven weeks in duration, five full days per week (Monday – Friday). The classes are held at at the LLCC East Springfield Learning Center located at 1507 E. Cook St. and on the LLCC main campus at 5250 Shepherd Road in Springfield.

Program overview
Math for the trades –
Math curriculum will focus on the fundamental concepts of basic numeric skills, measurement and conversion, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. The concepts will be supported with practical applications to a variety of technical trade vocations, including welding, plumbing, machine tool, mechanics, HVAC and other related fields. The math section addresses not only the concepts of math but the use of math in problem solving on the job, and in communicating and carrying out job-related tasks. Student certificates will include those areas mastered during the course.
Job readiness training –
The job readiness curriculum is designed to add to the overall success in a work environment. The workers of the future need skills that will allow them to communicate effectively with team members as well as adapt to a diverse workplace. Students will create action plans to balance work, family and lifelong learning during this course and will be evaluated in the following areas:
Personal Healthcare/Grooming
Reasoning and Problem Solving
Motivation and Self-esteem
Attendance and Punctuality
Budgeting
Technical skills training –
The technical skills program will allow students to practice the principles learned in the classroom portion of the program. This part of the program will include shop safety, tool usage and hands-on activities as well as computer simulated activities allowing real work application.

Additional information
In addition to the training components, students will participate in mock interviews and on-site visits with union officials prior to being accepted into an apprenticeship program. Union representatives will visit the classroom to give specific information on their particular trade and the process involved to enter and complete the apprenticeship program.
Student requirements for acceptance are: high school diploma or GED; at least a 9th grade testing level or above, at least 19 years old, and have an interest in the trades. Student accepted and enrolled in the program will participate in random drug testing throughout the program. Union acceptance also requires the student to have a valid Illinois driver’s license.
