Program Information:

The Geographic Information System (GIS) Certificate program is designed to provide a formal, project-based GIS education to develop skills from data management to problem solving using GIS technology.  GIS is increasingly utilized by businesses and government agencies to assess and improve operations.

  • Agricultural and supply chain management industries use GIS to track the food that is delivered to your local grocery store, increasing the safety and quality of the foods we eat.
  • Insurance professionals increasingly utilize GIS data to map natural disaster and social factors to ensure customers have the right coverage.
  • Public health officials rely on GIS technology to track outbreaks and map diseases, making sure their interventions are as effective as possible.
  • Urban planners apply GIS tools strategically place key service and residential structures, build roads and replace aging infrastructure, and plan for utility needs to ensure positive impacts on the quality of life of local citizens and reduced impact on local plant and animal life.
  • Natural resource industries/biologists depend on GIS data to determine how best to preserve and restore ecosystems, utilize land and water resources, and plan for sustainable harvesting.
  • Law enforcement rely on GIS to map criminal activity, traffic accidents, and parolee and probationer data.
