LLCC looking for volunteer tutors to assist with the adult education program in Hillsboro, Litchfield and Taylorville

SPRINGFIELD — Lincoln Land Community College is looking for volunteer tutors to assist with the adult education program at its Hillsboro, Litchfield and Taylorville locations. Volunteers are needed to help adults improve their reading, math and writing skills.

“We are offering multiple formats for tutoring, including face-to-face following health guidelines, remote and a combination of the two,” says Laura Lessman, LLCC adult education literacy coordinator. “We are happy to help volunteers navigate the remote tutoring experience.”

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old with reading and/or math abilities, but they do not need to have a teaching degree. LLCC will provide all the training and materials the tutors need, including the books tutors will use with the students and a tutoring handbook.

The time commitment will be a minimum of one hour a week (although some volunteer for two or three hours per week), and times are flexible based on each tutor’s availability. Tutors primarily work with students Monday through Friday but can also volunteer for the weekend.

“Two valued traits in a tutor are patience and the ability to provide encouragement to their students,” explains Lessman. “Our volunteers can help low-literate adults become more attractive to employers, as well as prepare them for high school equivalency classes or further education/training if they already have a high school diploma.”

If interested in volunteering, contact laura.lessman@llcc.edu or 217-786-2349.

The volunteer tutoring program is made possible through a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library, a division of the office of the Illinois Secretary of State, using funds designated for literacy.

If interested in receiving tutoring services for literacy in math, reading and English as a second language (not GED), contact laura.lessman@llcc.edu or 217-786-2349. Staff will talk with those in need of services about qualifications and goals.

In addition to literacy services, LLCC Adult Education offers free GED preparation classes in Hillsboro, Litchfield and Taylorville. For information, visit www.llcc.edu/adult-education or call 217-786-2349.
