Cultural exhibits, food, entertainment; free event open to public
SPRINGFIELD — Lincoln Land Community College invites the public to its 14th annual Multicultural Fest Wednesday, Oct. 4. The event takes place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. outside A. Lincoln Commons on the Springfield campus, 5250 Shepherd Rd. LLCC Outreach Centers in Beardstown, Jacksonville, Litchfield and Taylorville will also host celebrations. The events are free and open to the public.
The annual Multicultural Fest on the Springfield campus showcases various cultures with ethnic food, entertainment and cultural exhibits.
Local restaurants are offering free samples of ethnic food at the event. Restaurants serving from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. include Clay’s Popeye’s Bar-B-Q, Flavor of India, Hunan Chinese Restaurant, Boccardi’s Italian Imports, AZ-T-CA Mexican Grill and Nickey’s Place.
Entertainment includes a dance performance by LLCC Dance Club: Express Your Seoul, Zach Fedor from the LLCC Jazz Club on guitar and DJ Yinka who will cover music from various regions of the world such as Latin America, Asia and Africa.
Those providing cultural exhibits are Sol Peru, Springfield Baha’i Center, Sokol Polish Folk Dancers, Lotus Fire Belly Dancers, Indian Association of Greater Springfield, Ann Jonz, Illinois Organ/Tissue Donor Registry, Mobilelink Cricket Wireless, Habitat for Humanity of Sangamon County, Springfield Bonzai Society, Sister Cities Association, Springfield Commission on International Visitors and others. LLCC clubs and departments participating include the LLCC Arts & Humanities Department, Logger Activities Board, Hablamos, Agriculture Club, Gay Straight Alliance and Feminist Activist Coalition.
In addition to the festivities taking place on the Springfield campus, LLCC Outreach Centers will also hold events.
LLCC-Beardstown, 109 White Pine Ln. – Wednesday, Oct. 4, noon
Entertainment includes an African drum presentation and dance. The event will also feature a native dress fashion show. Cultural food served will include African, Chinese, French, German, Hispanic, Irish and Italian cuisines. LLCC students will provide flags of their country to add to a banner.
LLCC-Litchfield, 1 Lincoln Land Dr. – Tuesday, Oct. 10, noon-1 p.m.
LLCC-Taylorville, 800 S. Spresser – Wednesday, Oct. 11, noon-1 p.m.
LLCC-Jacksonville, 32 N. Central Park Plaza – Thursday, Oct. 12, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
At each of these events, entertainment includes DJ Yinka who will showcase music from around the world. An artist will provide henna painting. Students will participate in cultural arts and crafts. Food from various cultures will be served.
