Summer College For Kids

There is something for everyone!

This summer College for Kids will offer more than 60 camps, classes and pop-ups for students entering 1st through 12th grades. We have traditional favorites, like our very popular culinary camps, Girls on the Run, and STEM camps. There are also lots of new offerings including career explorations, gardening, music, painting, theatre and yoga. New for 2024 we introduce pop-up camps and Lego Clubs. These single-day camps are offered for all ages.  

Camps are organized by the grade your child will be entering in for the 2024/2025 school year. Select the grade level your child will be entering in the 2024/2025 school year to view the drop down list of offerings available and click the green button to register.

  • Camps are designed for students entering the grades listed.
  • Camps start June 10 and run through July 25.
  • Most camps meet Monday through Thursday.  
  • Morning sessions are held 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.  
  • Afternoon sessions are held 1-4 p.m. 
  • Pop-Up camp days and times vary. 
  • Lego Clubs meet on select Saturdays throughout the summer.

Lego Builders Club

Calling all Lego fans! Join with other Lego enthusiasts as we build together. This twice-monthly workshop will provide the blocks and challenges, while you provide creativity and skill. Participants will work individually and in groups.

Yoga and Mindfulness 

Yoga and mindfulness can help students build self-regulatory skills, resilience, social awareness, and confidence. They also learn gross motor skills, increase strength, and improve fitness. Illinois Symphony Youth Orchestra Camp (2nd-5th grades)

The Illinois Symphony Youth Orchestra’s College for Kids camp introduces children to different string instruments including violin, viola, cello, and bass, and gives them the opportunity to begin learning to play violin with a skilled instructor! Campers will get to hear and handle different string instruments throughout the week, learn about various music concepts, such as rhythm through fun activities and be visited by professional musicians! Instruments will be provided, and no previous experience with music or playing an instrument is required.

Creative Art Activities - Presented by the Garvey Tubman Cultural Arts and Research Center

Our camp experience offers children the opportunity to explore visual communications, artistic collaborations, creative processes, learn the wonders of making and creating sculptures, and visual arts techniques. There is an emphasis on learning how to repurpose recycled materials for artistic expression. Students will work in groups and individually to create unique projects.

Digging for Dinosaurs - Paleontology and Geology

Come enter the world of fossils, rocks, and dinosaurs! We will become amateur paleontologists while we study the past, examining the physical remains of what was left behind over 11,000 years ago! Learning how to look at fossils and rocks provides us with an exciting window to a prehistoric world where dinosaurs, along with many other extinct animals, lived and died.

Drumtastic

Students will experience the power of music, rhythm, movement, and drumming. This high-energy class combines traditional aerobic movement with the powerful beat and rhythms of the drums. Students will explore rhythms by using stability balls on stands and drumsticks and have opportunities for creative movement exploration. Designed for enthusiastic students of all skill levels, the camp is full of performing, learning and listening opportunities.

Mandala Making for Beginners (Pop-Up Class)

The term mandala is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning “circle.” Mandalas are circular and contain patterns. The designs are found across many cultures and can by symbols of the universe, nature, family, community and/or used for meditation. Students will learn about mandalas and then choose to draw or create a 3-dimensional mandala using natural materials and craft supplies. All materials will be provided.

Let’s open a time capsule from Springfield and the surrounding area before and after 1840. Monday and Tuesday will focus on life here before 1840 - what was life like for kids, how did people dress and eat. A field trip to New Salem will deepen our understanding. Wednesday and Thursday will explore life in our area after 1840. Political and social change opened Springfield up to the world and resulted in innovation and new ways of looking at and doing things. A field trip to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library will give us new perspectives and help us compare and contrast our time and then.

Let’s Get Chemical

Kids will learn basic chemistry concepts from capillary action to chemical reactions and even create some edible treats that explore the chemistry of food. The Beat - Electronic Beat Making

Since the emergence of hip-hop in the 1970s, Disc Jockeys have played a central part of American musical culture. Join us in celebrating the 51st anniversary of the genre by learning about the history of hip-hop and rap in the United States and creating your own stylized beats and musical creations. This Beat Making class will be an introductory exploration of various digital music platforms that can be easily accessed at home and at school. Watt’s Up? - Electrical Circuitry

This camp introduces middle and high school students to the fundamentals of electrical wiring by explaining concepts and using hands on lab exercises. Experiences include wiring a light switch to a light, wiring receptacles and building their own lamp from a repurposed bottle that they can take home.

Girls in Construction

This camp introduces high school students to construction management as well as construction trades apprenticeships. Local History Spotlight-The 1908 Race Riot (Pop-Up Class)

In August 1908, a mob of around 5000 white residents of Springfield, IL attempted to lynch two African-American men in the Sangamon County Jail. When they were prevented from doing so, they rampaged across Black neighborhoods in the city for the next two days, leading to the deaths of at least 8 Blacks and leaving thousands as refugees. Prof. Aaron Berkowitz will discuss the background to the Race Riot, walk through the events of 14-16 August 1908 and talk about the long-term consequences of the event, including the founding of the NAACP.

Camp GOTR combines the best of Girls on the Run with all the fun of camp! During this session, incoming 3rd-5th grade girls will build friendships in a fun and inclusive setting that includes interactive games, being physically active and expressing creativity through art and crafts and storytelling. How are camp offerings organized?

  • Camps are organized by the grade your child will be entering in for the 2024/2025 school year, each with their own drop down list of offerings
  • Culinary, Girls On The Run, Theater and Online Black Rocket Camps are available for children in several combined grade levels.  They each have their own camp drop downs and registration forms.
  • We offer a variety of camp options including morning and afternoon camps, Monday-Thursday camps, Saturday Lego camps and single day Pop-Up camps. All camp options are located in the camp/grade drop down.

How do I register?

  • We recommend online registration. Forms are organized by camps/grades and are located at the top of each camp/grades drop down list.  
  • Select the camp/grades level your child will be entering in the 2024/2025 school year. View the list of options available and click the registration button at the top of the list.

How do I register multiple children?

  • You will need to complete a registration form for each child you are registering. Registration forms are located at the top of each camp/grades drop down.  

How do I register for multiple camps?

  • You can select and register for multiple camps listed on same registration form.
  • 6th graders have the option of enrolling in camps for 4th-6th grades AND 6th-8th grades. You will need to complete two forms to select options from both camp/grade drop downs.
  • You will need to complete a separate registration form for culinary and theater camps.
  • Girls On The Run and Black Rocket Camp registration is completed through their perspective websites. Please note payment is collected at time of registration for Girls on the Run and Black Rocket.

Can I register by telephone?

  • We recommend you complete the online registration form for summer College for Kids to view the waiver and provide necessary information. 
  • LLCC Registration does not take phone registrations for Summer College For Kids Camps.  

Can I register in-person?

  • We recommend you complete the online registration form for summer College for Kids to view the waiver and provide necessary information.
  • You can register in-person Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at LLCC Community Education office located on the main campus Millennium Center, Springfield, IL 62703.

How is payment collected?

  • LLCC Community Education will contact you within three business days of receiving your completed registration form to collect credit card payment.  Important - If we are unable to reach you to collect payment after two attempts, your registration will be dropped.  
  • To pay by check, visit the LLCC Community Education office located on the main campus Millennium Center, Springfield, IL 62703.

What are the drop off and pick up procedures?

  • All students will be dropped off and picked up from the LLCC main campus, Trutter Center Building, 5250 Shepherd Rd. Springfield. View campus map.
  • All students must be accompanied by an adult.
  • All adults are required to sign in the student each day of camp.
  • Students may be dropped off no more than 15 before the start of a camp.
  • All adults picking up and signing out the students must be listed on the registration form under the "Authorized to Pick Up" section and will be asked to show I.D.
  • Students must be picked up no later than 15 minutes after camp is over.
