Addison Patrick

Science in action

Addison Patrick, a biology student at LLCC, was selected for a competitive summer research program. The program, held during the summer of 2025, offered LLCC students the opportunity to participate in real-world scientific research.

“I applied for the internship because I wanted more lab experience,” said Patrick. “Until then, I didn’t realize LLCC offered research opportunities like this, and I was thrilled to work on a specific project over an extended period in a lab setting.”

The program began in March with hybrid coursework at LLCC, designed to prepare students for the hands-on research phase. “We did practice labs, including PCR and primer design,” Patrick explained. “Dr. Shanle introduced us to lab techniques that aligned with the experiments we’d be doing. We also covered time management, lab safety and strategies for success in a research environment.”

In the second phase of the program, Patrick and two other LLCC students conducted research at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS), focusing on gene mutations linked to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. “We tested mutations in yeast genes that are similar to the human genes responsible for the disease,” she said. “We were able to identify several mutations that may contribute to the condition in humans.”

At the end of the summer, the students presented their findings to faculty from both institutions. “My favorite part was the poster presentation,” said Patrick. “Even though I was nervous, it was incredibly rewarding to share the results of our work and show what we discovered.”

Patrick encourages other students interested in biology or research to consider applying for the program. “It’s a great opportunity to gain experience, build confidence and explore what it’s like to be part of a research team.”
