RADiating Success
The LLCC Radiography program is known for fostering meaningful connections among students. Over the course of the two years, cohorts learn, study and travel to professional conference together — building relationships that extend far beyond the classroom.
“My favorite memory was completing this program with my classmates as we have grown so close,” he said.
Those friendships, he explained, were the icing on the cake of an already positive experience at LLCC. The radiography program offered the flexibility he needed to earn his degree while continuing to work.
LLCC also provided opportunities for leadership and service. Smothers served as the president of the LLCC Student Radiographers Association and volunteered with the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI), experiences that strengthened both is professional skills and personal growth.
Now, Smothers already has a job at Springfield Memorial Hospital and is eager to take his passion for healing and helping to the next level.
“I look forward to being able to help patients and their loved ones to have a positive and safe healing environment while I work with them to bring them competent care,” he said.
When asked what he will take away from LLCC that will most benefit his career, Smothers pointed to one word: acceptance.
“There’s a feeling of acceptance that resonates through the school,” he said. “It reminds me there are so many walks of life that we are around and deserve kindness and acceptance.”
His advice to prospective students is simple: embrace the community.
"There is a clear community here," Smothers said. "If you allow yourself to be a part of it, you’ll find there is more than just classes.”
