LLCC’s Academy of Lifelong Learning – something for everyone

The Academy of Lifelong Learning (ALL), a senior (over 50) adult learning organization, is part of the community education department at Lincoln Land Community College and is off to another great year, which began with our annual kickoff event in August. Members were entertained by the Springfield International Folk Dancers. Many members and community residents who were interested in what we have to offer were in attendance. We enjoyed learning about all the upcoming events being planned and even learned a few dances!

I have been a member of ALL for over 10 years, actively participating in planning, programming and decision-making in various roles. I have seen the membership grow by approximately 30%. The number of monthly program offerings has also expanded — from 12 to almost 20. With so many options, ALL has something for everyone.

Programming options include groups for readers, writers, history buffs and those interested in staying up to date on current events, in learning about and exploring our community and institutions, and in playing both games and sports. I continue to discover new interests and to meet new people. I truly believe that being involved and active has helped me to stay engaged in my community and to continue to learn and grow.

In addition to the set programs, special programs are developed throughout the year. The Arts Committee offered a full day of workshops on various arts and crafts such as crochet, clay pot painting and photography. Last winter the Science Committee developed a thought-provoking, three-part series on artificial intelligence. In the coming year, the arts group is planning two performing arts programs — a fall showcase of ALL talents and a spring program bringing some of the most special performers in the area to LLCC. The science group is developing a series on “Cryptocurrency: Past, Present and Future.”

The theme for this year is “Curious about Cultures.” To go along with that theme, a second book club has been established. For this inaugural year, the selected book each month will be written by an author from that month’s featured culture. Another new program, called Game On, will offer an opportunity for members to learn and play a variety of games, such as Pictionary, Charades and Mexican Train Dominos.

If you are 50 or older, give some consideration to joining this group of adults who believe you are never too old to learn. The leaders, along with the LLCC Community Education staff are continually looking for ways to stay current with the changing world and the needs and interests of ALL members.
