There are few moments in the life of a college as meaningful as Commencement, and last Friday, May 15, was a powerful reminder of why our mission at Lincoln Land Community College matters. As I looked out over our graduates — surrounded by proud families, friends and faculty — I was filled with deep pride and gratitude. Each graduate represented a story of determination, resilience and hope. Whether they balanced classes with full-time jobs, cared for their families while pursuing their education or were the first in their families to earn a college credential, their accomplishments reflect the very heart of our institution.
Commencement is both an ending and a beginning. It marks the culmination of years of effort while opening doors to our graduates’ next opportunities. Our graduates leave us prepared to transfer to universities to complete bachelor’s degrees, step into high-demand health care and trades roles, advance in their current careers or launch entirely new ones. Watching them cross the stage is a reminder of the transformative power of education — and of the vital role community colleges play in that transformation.
LLCC has served as a gateway to opportunity for students and communities alike, responding to the evolving needs of local employers to help ensure that businesses have the talent they need to thrive. Beyond traditional degree and career training programs, we extend our impact through professional development and community education. From short-term opportunities that help individuals quickly upskill to personal enrichment courses that inspire lifelong learning, these offerings strengthen families, support employers and contribute to the vitality of the region we proudly serve.
For me personally, this Commencement was especially meaningful. It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as president of Lincoln Land Community College for the past 20 years. Over these two decades, I have had the privilege of witnessing countless student success stories, working alongside dedicated faculty and staff, and seeing our college grow in both scope and impact. While higher education has evolved in many ways during this time, our core mission has remained constant: to transform lives and strengthen our communities through learning.
While the spring semester has come to a close, the work of the college — and the opportunities it provides — continue throughout the summer months. Summer session classes offer a convenient and cost-effective option for students looking to get an early start on their college journey, get ahead in their current program or transfer a course to a four-year university. It is an ideal time to make progress toward academic goals while benefiting from smaller class sizes and professors who are focused on teaching.
In addition, we are proud to offer a wide range of summer camp experiences designed to inspire curiosity, build confidence and introduce new possibilities. LLCC’s summer College for Kids program invites youth in grades 1-10 to explore hands-on learning on a real college campus in a fun, supportive environment. These camps span a wide variety of interests — from science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities to arts, theatre, beekeeping, culinary arts, gardening, the trades and more — encouraging imagination while building skills. View all the opportunities at llcc.edu/college-for-kids.
Our Career Quest Camps provide an exciting opportunity for students to explore potential career pathways in a meaningful, interactive way. These free camps provide students hands-on experience in careers that are in demand in our region and beyond. For high school students and recent graduates, the Build & Wire Skills Camp introduces construction and electrical careers, giving participants the opportunity to use professional tools, learn basic wiring and complete a woodworking project. In addition, the Hospitality Leadership Launch camp provides behind-the-scenes experiences in hospitality and tourism, showing how great experiences are created. AgExplorers camp for middle school students offers a hands-on summer program for students interested in plant and animal science, farm mechanics, ag tech and more. Learn more at llcc.edu/summer-camps.
And for those with an interest in athletics, our Loggers sports camps offer an opportunity to learn from experienced coaches while building skills, teamwork and sportsmanship. These camps cover baseball, boys’ basketball, girls’ volleyball, soccer and softball. Learn more at lincolnlandloggers.com.
We also invite prospective students and their families to experience our campus firsthand through a summer Campus Visit Day on Tuesday, June 16, 5-7:30 p.m. The opportunity allows future students to tour our facilities, meet faculty and staff, learn about academic programs and student support services, and get a true feel for the many opportunities available to them. It is an excellent way for future students to ask questions, explore pathways and take the first step toward achieving their educational goals. More information and event registration are available at llcc.edu/campus-visit-day.
As we prepare for summer activities and continue to celebrate the achievements of our graduates, I am reminded that education is not confined to a single season. It is a lifelong journey. Whether you are a recent graduate, a returning student, a working professional or a young learner just beginning to explore your interests, our college is here for you.
Congratulations again to the Class of 2026. You inspire us all, and we look forward to seeing your continued success and the impact you will make in our communities.
