SPRINGFIELD — Lincoln Land Community College will host “What Were You Wearing?”, a thought-provoking exhibit that centers on survivor voices and challenges long-standing myths that place blame on those who have experienced harm. The exhibit will be on display April 7-9 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in A. Lincoln Commons on the LLCC campus, 5250 Shepherd Road, Springfield.

“What Were You Wearing?” is an internationally recognized visual art installation that confronts a question frequently directed at survivors — one that can imply responsibility or shame. By showcasing recreated outfits alongside personal stories, the exhibit reframes the conversation, emphasizing that clothing does not determine consent and never justifies harm.

“This is our second year hosting this exhibit which is about listening to survivors and honoring their experiences,” says Shelley Vaughan, LLCC compliance and prevention coordinator. “We invite students and attendees to walk through, reflect and help shift the focus away from judgment and toward understanding, empathy and accountability. Everyone deserves safety and respect, no matter what they are wearing.”

Originally created in 2013 by Dr. Jen Brockman and Mary Wyandt Hiebert and first exhibited at the University of Arkansas in 2014, “What Were You Wearing?” has been displayed in all 50 U.S. states and more than 38 countries. The exhibit was inspired by the poem “What I Was Wearing” by Mary Simmerling.

The event is sponsored by LLCC Student Services.
