Unmatched opportunity: Discover a career in health care

Dr. Cynthia Maskey, dean, Health Professions at Lincoln Land Community College

Would you like a career where your skills are always in demand, no two days are ever the same and you have strong earning potential? What if, in addition, you could enjoy a flexible schedule, excellent benefits and the ability to work anywhere in the country? Some say the greatest advantage of this work is the opportunity to care for others and improve their lives. For those seeking an interesting, stable, meaningful and future-proof career, health care offers unmatched opportunity.

Health care is more than just what you see on TV. Choosing a career in health care means stepping into a dynamic, fast-paced world where your knowledge, compassion and courage can change lives every single day. It’s about becoming part of a team that is working together to diagnose, treat and care for patients with complex illnesses and injuries. Health care providers are smart, passionate, attentive and protective, and strive continually to do the best for their patients.

When you choose to study health care, you're not just preparing for a career — you’re stepping into a role that transforms lives and strengthens your community. At Lincoln Land Community College, you can begin by training locally. Your skills will help improve health outcomes and build a healthier, more resilient future for everyone around you. It’s more than a job. It’s a calling to serve, uplift and lead in the place you call home.

With a legacy of excellence and pulse on future needs, LLCC is powering the next generation of health care heroes and strengthening local health care systems. With a variety of programs that teach the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to get ready for a job in health care, the choice of program or career path is yours. LLCC’s options include shorter programs that last only weeks, semester long programs, one-year and two-year programs.

I’m proud that LLCC’s health professions programs prepare students for the future of care through immersive, hands-on learning. From active classroom engagement to cutting-edge lab spaces tailored to each discipline, students train using the latest technology — including new simulation environments for nursing and emergency medical services. These realistic simulations build confidence and critical thinking skills in a safe, supportive setting. Every program also includes clinical practice, giving students real-world experience in hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities, health departments, schools and more. It’s a powerful blend of innovation and community connection that equips our graduates.

LLCC nursing leads the way with more enrolled nursing students than any other Springfield, Illinois program.  Our programs offer multiple pathways to success — preparing graduates to become registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs) or certified nursing assistants (CNAs). The RN and LPN programs offer high-fidelity simulations that mirror real-life patient care scenarios to prepare students, and each nursing program has significant time in the lab to practice skills as well as clinical experiences — all to ensure our graduates are confident, capable and career-ready from day one.

Our newly renovated emergency medical services (EMS) spaces are designed to mirror the environments where first responders — emergency medical technicians (EMTs), advanced EMTs and paramedics — save lives every day. Students train in a fully equipped ambulance, a cutting-edge ambulance simulator and realistic settings like a furnished apartment and three simulation labs — including a trauma-focused emergency room shared with the radiography program, which teaches students about using X-rays to produce diagnostic images. This space features the latest Carestream DR Fit radiographic unit, the same advanced technology found in hospital trauma centers.

LLCC’s occupational therapy assistant (OTA) program also received a transformative upgrade and is now offering a shorter completion timeline and a convenient fall start. OTA students train to become skilled rehabilitation specialists, learning to help people of all ages live fuller, more independent lives — combining science, creativity and compassion in a field with high demand, competitive salaries and diverse and rewarding career opportunities.

Additional program offerings include respiratory care and neurodiagnostic technology. Respiratory therapists provide hands-on care to patients in emergency situations as well as helping them improve their daily lives. Neurodiagnostic techs use the latest technology to assist in diagnosing brain conditions. You can also get training for careers in central sterile service technician, exercise and sports science, radiography, sonography, surgical technology and more.

A career in health care is more than a profession. It’s a purpose. By choosing health care training, you’re preparing to step into a field where every skill you learn and every patient you help can make a life-changing difference. With cutting-edge technology, immersive simulations and real-world clinical experiences, you’ll be equipped to meet the challenges of tomorrow with confidence and compassion.

I welcome anyone interested in exploring training for a health care career, to join us for Campus Visit Day on Monday, Oct. 13, starting at 10 a.m. You can meet with faculty and staff, tour facilities and learn more about the programs offered.
